Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods and water. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by strengthening the enamel structure and making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks which are one of the causes of dental cavities.  Fluoride is added to toothpaste, mouth rinse and drinking water.  In the dental office, the fluoride treatment consists of applying a thin coating of fluoride varnish over the teeth. The American Dental Association recommends that children have a professional application of fluoride twice per year.
